Wed, 02 2019 13:00:00 GMT Reese Witherspoon’s Daughter Is Rocking A New Cotton-Candy Hair Color It’s a well-known fact that Ava Phillippe — the daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe — shares a striking resemblance to both of her parents. Her face holds a lot of her dad’s features: The bright-blue eyes and the shape of her lips and nose. But her hair — particularly the blonde color — is a look she gets from her mom, and it’s one of the reasons the two could pass for twins. However, the 20-year-old has been playing with hair dye in her college dorm room recently, taking her formerly blonde hair to an edgy cotton-candy pink. Phillippe posted her fresh hair color on Instagram, and according to her caption, the new shade is a repeat of a style she rocked in high school. “Dressed up as my 2014 self last night, proving that her essence is alive and well,” she wrote next to the clip of her angsty Friday-night look, complete with a black choker necklace. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ava (@avaphillippe) on Sep 27, 2019 at 1:47pm PDT There’s a chance that this new look could be due to a pink wig, but if the past is any proof, we’d guess that Phillippe’s pink hair is a permanent, or at least a semi-permanent, change. In addition to trying pastel-pink hair back in high school, Phillippe has experimented with icy blue dip-dyed ends before and even wore rainbow hair for Coachella this past spring. Maybe there was some kind of throwback-themed party at UC Berkeley this weekend, or perhaps Phillippe just missed the fun colorful hair she’s worn in the past. Either way, we’re into the self-expression, and apparently Witherspoon is, too. She commented on her daughter’s reveal post: “Pinky!” with a bright-pink heart and shooting star emoji. As the sun sets on summer, picking outfits becomes harder thanks to chilly mornings and hot-as-hell afternoons. Figuring out what to do with your hair is equally complex. Traditionally, going darker as the weather gets cooler seems like a no-brainer, but top colorists and their celebrity clients, like Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner, are making a case for going brighter for fall. That's where chestnut brown comes in.  The universally-flattering tone is the perfect in-between option for the awkward pre-fall weather. According to L'Oreal Professionnel colorist Jo-Blackwell Preston, chestnut is a neutral brown with hints of auburn and violet. The chestnut spectrum doesn't stop there, though — you can also accomplish the color with hints of amber and beige.Celebrities like Priyanka Chopra and Janet Mock have already taken the cozy color for a spin, making a case for going chestnut brown even more convincing. Ahead, we've rounded up everything you need to know about the trending hair color before you book a salon appointment.  At Refinery29, we’re here to help you navigate this overwhelming world of stuff. All of our market picks are independently selected and curated by the editorial team. If you buy something we link to on our site, Refinery29 may earn commission. Celebrity hairstylist Harry Josh gave Priyanka Chopra's naturally-dark hair some warm chestnut highlights with hints of auburn. Preston says to opt for a reflective brown hue to achieve a look similar. "You want your color to appear dimensional and velvety, versus heavy and flat," she says. Moral of the story? Bring in this photo and ask for a cool brown base with warm hints of mahogany.Unlike Chopra's auburn highlights, Janet Mock's take on the trend is bolder. Her chestnut strands start from the root and cascade down to the ends of her hair. Don't fret if you're afraid of using bleach on your naturally-dark hair, because it's not always required. "It's not necessary to pre-lighten dark hair to achieve chestnut brown," Preston explains. She says to ask your colorist to use "a volume two developer to release the natural warm undertones of the hair." (It's okay if you don't know what that means because your colorist will!)If your hair is already blonde or pre-lightened, Preston suggests opting for a semi-permanent copper color before applying permanent color on top. "This will prevent your finished product from being hollow and splotchy," Preston says.  The best part of chestnut brown — aside from feeling cozy and fall-ready — is the maintenance. Unlike dramatic changes, like double-process platinum, or all-over highlights, the shade grows out nicely. However, to maintain the vibrancy and overall appearance of your hair, Preston suggests upkeep every six weeks. "I always recommend getting a gloss between appointments to enhance shine and luster, especially on thick, curly hair," she says. According to celebrity colorist Ryan Trygstad, chestnut hair can still turn brassy. So, to prevent dull, unwanted red tones from invading your color, opt for gentle shampoos. He suggests Shu Umera Color Lustre Shampoo, which helps to prevent fading. A nourishing conditioning treatment, like L'Oreal Inforcer or Oribe Beautiful Color masque, is also encouraged to keep color shiny.Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?
